Atome Review 2026: Is Buy Now Pay Later Really Free?

Atome is the buy now, pay later app you see at the checkout of half the fashion and beauty shops in Singapore. It splits a purchase into three equal payments, a month apart, with no interest and no fee.

For a disciplined shopper who pays with a rewards credit card, that is close to free money: you keep your cash longer and still earn your card’s points. The costs are in the late fees, the longer 6 to 12 month plans, and the easy habit of buying more than you meant to.

I went through Atome’s plans, fees, limits, licence and current referral terms, and set it against paying with a credit card. Here is the complete, honest verdict.

What Is Atome?

Atome is a buy now, pay later (BNPL) service launched in Singapore in 2019. The operator is Apaylater Financials Pte. Ltd., which holds a Major Payment Institution licence (PS20200511) from the Monetary Authority of Singapore under the Payment Services Act, per our Atome referral page.

That licence covers its payment services. BNPL lending itself is not regulated by MAS. Atome follows the industry BNPL Code of Conduct instead, which sets limits on late fees and requires checks on how much you owe across providers.

You use it online by choosing Atome at checkout, or in store by scanning the Atome QR code at the cashier. The smallest order is S$1.50, though some merchants set higher minimums.

The honest caveat: Atome is credit. It feels like a payment method, but missing payments costs money and can get your account suspended.

Atome Fees in 2026: The Full Breakdown

Plans

PlanCost
Pay in 30% interest, no service fee
Pay in 6One-time processing fee of 3% of the purchase
Pay in 9 or 120.75% of the purchase per month

Plan fees beyond pay-in-3 are from Comparesing’s September 2026 Atome guide. Not every merchant offers the longer plans.

On pay-in-3, the first payment is taken one day after you buy, and the next two every 30 days.

Late Fees

  • S$15 per missed payment on orders under S$1,000.
  • S$30 per missed payment on orders above S$1,000.
  • Your account is suspended until you settle, and repeated misses can lead to permanent suspension.

Repayment Fees

  • Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay cards: no card fee.
  • PayNow: no fee.
  • American Express: S$1 card fee.

Spending Limits

Atome sets a limit per user. Comparesing puts typical limits at about S$3,000 with a credit card and S$1,000 with a debit card. Paying on time and using a credit card as your default tends to keep it higher.

Hidden Costs to Know About

Longer plans are not cheap. A S$1,200 purchase on pay-in-12 at 0.75% a month costs S$108 in fees, which is 9% of the price. That is close to a personal loan rate, and higher than many credit card instalment plans.

Late fees add up fast. Miss all three payments on a S$300 order and you pay S$45 in fees, which is 15% of the order.

Auto-debits may not earn card rewards. Comparesing advises triggering payments two and three manually, because automatic deductions may not earn credit card rewards on some cards.

Spending creep. BNPL makes a S$300 purchase feel like S$100. That is the real cost for most people.

Core Features: What Atome Actually Does

Pay-in-3 With No Interest — The Strongest Feature

Pay-in-3 is genuinely free if you pay on time. There is no interest, no service fee and no card fee on Visa or Mastercard. For a planned purchase, it spreads the cost over two months at no charge.

Stacking With Credit Card Rewards

Atome purchases code as MCC 5999. Several Singapore cards give bonus rewards on that code or on online spend, so you can earn your card’s miles or cashback on each instalment. Check your card’s terms, since the list changes.

Atome+ Points

You earn 1 Atome+ point for every S$2 spent at participating brands, plus bonus points from challenges and a daily puzzle. Points are redeemed for brand vouchers and last 12 months. They are a small bonus, not a reason to use Atome.

Deals and Vouchers

Atome runs frequent brand promotions and vouchers in its Voucher Centre. Only one voucher or promo code works per order.

The Honest Assessment: What Holds Up and What Does Not

Pay-in-3 holds up. No interest and no fee, with wide acceptance at fashion, beauty, electronics and lifestyle merchants, is a good deal for people who pay on time.

The licence is real, but BNPL is lightly regulated. Atome’s payment licence and the BNPL Code of Conduct give some protection, but BNPL credit does not have the same rules as a bank loan or credit card.

Longer plans cost more than they look. 0.75% a month sounds small. On a 12-month plan it is 9% of the price.

Late fees are steep on small orders. A S$15 fee on a S$100 instalment is 15%.

It changes how you spend. User reviews on Seedly praise the convenience, and many also admit to buying more because of it.

Choose Atome pay-in-3 if you want to spread a planned purchase over two months at no cost and will pay on time.

Choose your credit card if you pay your bill in full each month. It is just as free, and you avoid adding another app.

Avoid Atome’s longer plans unless you have compared them with your bank’s instalment plan first.

Who Should Use Atome

Atome is a strong fit if:

  • You always pay bills on time.
  • You want to spread a planned purchase over two months for free.
  • You use a credit card that rewards MCC 5999 or online spend.
  • You shop often at Atome’s partner brands and use their vouchers.
  • You want instant approval without a new credit card.

Atome is not a strong fit if:

  • You have ever missed a credit card payment.
  • You would use pay-in-6, 9 or 12 to afford something.
  • You already carry credit card debt.
  • You find instalments make you spend more.
  • You want a big credit limit for large purchases.

Is Atome Worth It in 2026?

For disciplined shoppers, yes. Pay-in-3 is free, quick and widely accepted, and paired with the right credit card it can earn rewards on each payment. It is a useful cash-flow tool for a planned purchase.

For anyone who might pay late or stretch to afford something, no. Late fees of S$15 or S$30 and 9% on a 12-month plan turn a free tool into an expensive one.

The test for your first month: use Atome once for something you were going to buy anyway, set calendar reminders for payments two and three, and pay them manually with your rewards card.

Sign-up offer: new users who open the referral link before installing the app get a S$10 voucher off their first purchase. Claim it in the Voucher Centre and select it on the payment screen before you pay. The campaign runs until 31 December 2026. The Atome referral guide shows each step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Atome safe?

Atome is run by Apaylater Financials Pte. Ltd., which holds a Major Payment Institution licence from MAS for its payment services. BNPL credit itself is not regulated by MAS, and Atome follows the industry BNPL Code of Conduct. Atome is not a bank, so SDIC deposit insurance does not apply.

Does Atome charge interest?

Not on pay-in-3, which has 0% interest and no service fee. Pay-in-6 carries a one-time 3% processing fee, and pay-in-9 and pay-in-12 cost 0.75% of the purchase per month, according to Comparesing’s September 2026 guide.

How much is the Atome late fee?

S$15 per missed payment on orders under S$1,000, and S$30 per missed payment on orders above S$1,000. Your account is suspended until you settle.

What is the Atome spending limit?

Atome sets a limit for each user. Comparesing puts typical limits at about S$3,000 with a credit card and S$1,000 with a debit card. Paying on time tends to keep your limit higher.

Does Atome affect my credit score?

BNPL use does not feed into your Credit Bureau Singapore score the way a bank loan or credit card does. Under the BNPL Code of Conduct, providers can share payment history with each other, so missed payments can affect your access to other BNPL apps.

Can I earn credit card rewards on Atome?

Yes, with the right card. Atome purchases code as MCC 5999, and several Singapore cards give bonus rewards on that code or on online spend. Pay instalments two and three manually, since automatic deductions may not earn rewards on some cards.

Final Verdict

Atome earns 3.8 out of 5 stars.

It earns its best marks for pay-in-3: free, instant, widely accepted and stackable with credit card rewards. For people who pay on time, it is one of the cheapest ways to spread a purchase.

The deductions come from everything else. Longer plans cost up to 9% of the price, late fees are steep on small orders, and BNPL is lightly regulated and easy to overuse.

Use Atome for planned purchases you could pay for today, and never miss a payment.
